Watoji is a traditional Japanese bookbinding style in which pages are hand-bound with thread. Since the late 1100s, Watoji-style books have been used for many purposes, including diaries, albums, sketchbooks, notebooks, textbooks, account books, and religious scriptures.
In this workshop, we’ll create several classic Japanese bound books and explore creative ways to expand beyond traditional forms, transforming books into unique works of art.
This is a fun, creative, and introspective experience. No previous bookbinding or artistic experience is necessary. Participants must be 15 years of age or older.
You’re welcome to bring your favorite papers, wrapping paper, old books, photographs, postcards, letters, or other treasured materials that have been tucked away in your cabinets for years. We’ll give these precious or forgotten pieces new life by transforming them into a unique keepsake.
Most importantly, bring your playful and expressive spirit. Together, we’ll create books that bring your memories, imagination, and creativity to life.

Tsumami Zaiku is a traditional Japanese craft that uses small pieces of kimono fabric to create delicate flowers and decorative objects such as hair ornaments and pins (kanzashi), floral balls, amulets, gift boxes, and other beautiful decorations.
The word tsumami means “pinching,” referring to the technique of repeatedly pinching and folding small pieces of fabric to create intricate flower petals.
In this workshop, you’ll learn the basic techniques of Tsumami Zaiku and create beautiful fabric flowers that can be used as brooches, bookmarks, gift embellishments, festive decorations, and more. No prior experience is necessary (but participants must be 15 years of age and older).
Simple, relaxing, and fun, Tsumami Zaiku is a wonderful way to slow down, enjoy the creative process, and make something beautiful by hand in a warm and meditative environment.
